Todd Childers is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Bowling Green State University. Todd’s primary research is in exploring typography in its myriad forms. His projects may be combinations of lettering, paper sculptures, digital media, and photography addressing theoretical and pragmatic themes.
Todd’s graphic design pedagogy focuses upon the intersection of typography, design systems, and design history. He has lectured internationally at several design conferences and workshops including: Design Inquiry’s Design Cities: Berlin, Typo Berlin: Shift and ATypI Word in Dublin.
His typographic designs were recognized in the Type Directors Club exhibition TDC 57 where his design Ironically Digital Typography was recognized for Typographic Excellence in Lettering. The same design was recognized at the Adobe Achievement Awards for Faculty where it reached the Semi-Finalist Level for Innovation in Traditional Media. His designs have been published in two of Steve Heller’s books: Typography Sketchbook in 2012 and earlier in Letterforms: Bawdy Bad & Beautiful in 2003.
Todd attended the AIGAXCD Workshop Sharing Dreams 7, participating in a Sharing Dreams Exhibition at the Centro Pablo Torriente Brau Gallery in Havana, Cuba in 2008. A portfolio of poster designs were selected by the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris for its Graphism Collection of contemporary graphic design in 2003. The Siggraph International Computer Graphics Conference selected Todd’s art book P003279723 Todd Childers is Neurosarcoidosis for the Siggraph Art Gallery in 2000. The Graphis book on digital typeface design Digital Fonts 1 selected Todd’s font designs: BurnOut, Fraktura, and Usher in 1997.
