Alumni Update: Interview with Alexdrina Chong

Posted in Alumni, Interview.

Alumni Alexdrina Chong, was looking for a School of Art that could provide her an interdisciplinary approach towards design/visual arts.

How did Graphic Design change your life?

A lot of things change my life. Graphic design didn’t. But it did give me an approach to understand and bridge abstract ideas into solutions, whether it’s a visual solution or a business strategy.

Where do your inspirations come from?

Art, music and reading (a lot).

Why did you establish a company in Kuala Lumpur?

Because I need to make a living and this is the best option. So far.

Could you tell me what is your most successful achievement?

That I am still in business… and haven’t given up yet.

What is a good design for you?

One that solves problems.

Would you incorporate Malaysian cultures in your works?

Always. We have impressive range of visual elements.

What colors do you would like to use in your works?

Tough question. I usually go with bright colours.

In my own illustrations, I find myself using Yellow and Blue a lot. And then black and white when I deal only with ink.

What do you usually do when you don’t have any motivation or inspiration while creating a new work?

I watch a movie by myself. I write. I read.

At my age, I am quite aware of what gets me going with work. Music is very important.

a). Jazz/Classical – for me to write strategy.

b). Electronic music – design

c). Classical/folk – illustration
