Paradise Tossed

As a native of southwest Florida, the problem I wanted to tackle was marine plastic pollution. The question posed for my senior thesis was “how can I challenge people’s relationship of plastic waste through design?” I created wearable design in the form of activism brooches, by crocheting single-use plastic bags into coral reefs, and setting them into Argentium silver bases. Each brooch was then sold, with proceeds being donated to The Ocean Conservancy. The purchase of a brooch was accompanied with two post cards and two stamps that customers could use to raise their voice and demand change by sending them to people who have the power to pass legislation to make a difference.

A website was also created as part of this project, so people could purchase brooches. For more information, please visit www.paradisetossed.org!
