Racing Thoughts

This piece is inspired by the extreme fluctuation of emotions and sensory overload that a race car driver experiences during a race. Going to an auto race is an awe inspiring experience to me because of the intense noise, adrenaline filled action on track, and the extreme amount of courage and it takes for a driver to race inches apart from another car at great speed. I am fascinated with the amount of faith that it takes for a driver to keep their eye on the goal, and persevere through such an extreme and varying experience.

I use sound to create a racing atmosphere, and to drive the movements of the visuals. The sounds are made from a combination of FM synthesis and recorded audio. To interpret a race car driver’s emotions, I create patterns, textures, and forms by distorting and re-mapping the pixels of video and still images, which I have taken at several race tracks. I use minimal typography to drive the narrative of the piece.
